Portobello Parmesan Sandwich

Yesterday I promised you a recipe to accompany the Josh Ritter song "Lawrence, KS." Today I deliver on that promise with a recipe from one of my favorite restaurant's in Lawrence. Because I love to cook and I'm a frugal fella, I don't like to eat out a lot. However, when I do eat out, I'm picky about where I dine. One of my favorite places to eat is Free State Brewery located in Lawrence's historic downtown. There's a lot to love about Free State Brewery. I first fell head over heels for their impressive roster of beers, but I soon realized the restaurant menu consisted of items that perfectly complemented those beers. One of my favorite menu items is the portobello Parmesan sandwich. Normally, I prefer a big hunk of meat with my meals, but this hearty sandwich will satisfy even the most die hard carnivores.

(My portobello Parmesan sandwich with a glass of oatmeal stout lurking in the background)

If you feel compelled to make this lovely sandwich, you can find the recipe here at Lawrence.com. I purchased all of the ingredients to make the sandwich and had every intention of preparing it, but I haven't been very motivated to try anything new in the kitchen.

There's still time to enter your name for my first giveaway. Just visit this post, leave a comment, and you'll be eligible to win your choice of a Josh Ritter CD or a cookbook from my basement bookshelf. As I write this, I've only had three people register, so you're odds are good.

take care,
muddywaters

Great photo work. Flash or natural light?

That looks so good. I'm gonna try it.
I don't remember if I told you or not but I think Lawrence is a beautiful town. We stayed there one weekend when we were goin' to the drag races in Pittsburg. I love the old part of town. This comin' year for the races, we've talked about stayin' in Lawrence again and I'm gonna check out Free State Brewery, sounds like our kind of place.
I read your comment at my blog and week before last we drove west on Route 66 and drove to Miami, OK and checked out Baxter Springs. There are a lot of good things to see along the way, and a lot of history. Baxter Springs is so pretty in the summer.
Lawrence has a lot of history around it. I guess you know about all the fightin' that went on between KS and MO before and durin' the Civil War, and the terrible tragedy there in Lawrence.
We love to road trip and it doesn't matter where you go there is always somethin' good to see and history to learn.

The Fun Fairy!: Thanks for stopping by, and I'll swing by your neck of the woods soon.

High Plains Drifters: Natural light. I would love to take a photography course, but I don't really need another hobby at this point in my life.

Rebel: Thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to document my trip when I swing through Baxter Springs.

Yeah yeah....I know. In fact I have several stories in the "works", but I'm still enjoying your pros! Keep up the good reads.

Just an FYI: Heard Mark Olson and Gary Louris on the local radio station yesterday. Will be touring together this spring/summer.

Another good one is Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Buddy Miller, calling themselves “Three Girls and Their Buddy”

One of my favorite Bottleneck shows was The Jayhawks. Fantastic show. I've love their "crunch" guitar sound and those great harmonies.

Thanks for the update.

Jayhawks at the Bottleneck... I'm starting to cry just thinking about that, and I've only been there twice in my life.

Hey... never responded to your WLH-M quote. You said you can see and smell the weather long before it arrives. Funny... one of my first trips to Nebraska, I was outside running around the farm when I saw clouds forming. So I started to roll up my car windows. "Watcha doing?" M's dad asked. "Rolling up my windows," I said. "Looks like rain."

"Yep, it's raining alright... in Wyoming, about 400 miles from here." Delivered that in total deadpan, not a hint of emotion or sarcasm or anything.

Unfortunately they seem to have taken it off the menu. I hope it's a limited time thing since I absolutely love that sandwich.
